The Department of Education reviewed 22 private collection agencies, and found that five were engaging in misleading practices and violating federal and state laws. The agencies received funds from the federal government for collecting debts on delinquent federal student loans. Pioneer Credit Recovery was one of these five agencies. Reasons for severing ties with the agencies included agents providing inaccurate representations about a loan rehabilitation program available to struggling borrowers.
